Swat emergency relief camp
Swat IDP relief camp Yet again a humanitarian disaster is being played out on our TV screens. This time it is the people in the war-torn Swat Valley in Pakistan. According to Pakistani media there may be up to 2.5 million internally displaced people (IDP).

We decided we must assist and so during May 2009, we held emergency meetings in the UK to draft a plan of action. Within two weeks of the initial decision being made, HWH had sent a team to Sheikh Janah in District Swabi, North West Frontier approximately 100km from Islamabad. They set up camp in the local civic offices, locally called union councils, on 27 May 2009 and began work soon after.

Heading-up the team was Pervez Choudhry who had volunteered, at his own expense, to go out and coordinate the effort. As this report goes to print the camp is up and running and people are being seen and treated.

Consultant supervision The following are available to the camp for advice on a weekly rotation: Prof Ajmal Naqvi, Prof Arshad Chouhan, Prof Murtaza Cheema and Dr Imran Fazal
